The Pearl-Qatar in Doha, Qatar is an artificial island spanning nearly four million square metres. When completed it will be the first land in Qatar to be available for freehold ownership by foreign nationals.

Once completed The Pearl will create over 32 kilometers of new coastline, for use as a residential estate with an expected 15,000 dwellings by 2010. Developed by United Development Company (UDC) and master planned by architecture and design firm Callison, the island is located 350 metres offshore of Doha’s West Bay Lagoon area.

Residential development on the island is intended to incorporate various national and international themes including aspects of Arabic, Mediterranean and European culture. Commercial and educational facilities are also planned to support the various residential precincts.

Visitors can now get a first look at phase one of The Pearl - Qatar, Porto Arabia. The first five parcels of Porto Arabia, the first three bays developed on The Pearl - Qatar are now complete.

The name "The Pearl" was chosen because the island will be built on one of Qatar's previous major pearl diving sites. Qatar was one of the major pearl traders of Asia before the Japanese introuced cheaper more affordable pearls just before Qatar's oil boom. The Pearl Qatar will help represent Qatar's rich past in the pearl industry. Once completed The Pearl will represent a string of pearls.

There will be over 13 islands when finished. The largest of the islands will feature a large range of luxury villas, apartments, three 5 star hotels and over two million square meters of international retail, restaurants, cafes and entertainment. Eight other private islands will be for sale to private owners with the opportunity to build whatever they may desire...

Jaeger-LeCoultre iPhone application

Jaeger-LeCoultre has launched a new iPhone application that aims to share the fascinating world of fine watch making with the public.

Rather than simply present their collection, the app invites you to look at iconic models from a whole new angle: the perspective of an amateur watchmaker.

The application lets you explore the various stages in creating a watch, and a comprehensive horological dictionary compliments the six introductory lessons.

The classes enable users to practice watchmaking techniques directly on their iPhone screen: assembling a chronograph mechanism, decorating and jeweling a movement, polishing, engraving and gem-setting a case.

The watch classes are displayed at a rate of one new class every two weeks.

At the end of all the lessons a prize draw will reward one of the learners having correctly answered all three competition questions.

The winner will be offered a guided tour of the Manufacture located in the Vallée de Joux.

The return of Fabergé

After two years of planning, Fabergé, the brand famous for its ornately jeweled eggs, has presented its first jewelry collection in 92 years.

The collection uses hundreds or thousands of tiny gems on each piece to create mosaic effects on rings, brooches, earrings and necklaces.

The collection was designed by Parisian artist-jeweler Frederic Zaavy in collaboration with Faberge Creative Director Katharina Flohr.

Together, the team was charged with generating a contemporary expression of Peter Carl Faberge’s spirit, ethos and values.

Pieces in the collection–inspired by founder Peter Carl Faberge’s artistry and craftsmanship–start at a retail price of $30,000, with an average price tag of $200,000.

The pieces will not be available through third-party retailers but will be sold via the online flagship store with the support of a single Faberge retail store in Geneva.

The privately-held group is aiming to break into the competitive luxury goods market with limited investment during a downturn and eventually challenge giants like Bulgari, Tiffany and Cartier .

“We decided to be bold. We saw this as a massive opportunity,” Chief Executive Mark Dunhill said at a launch on Wednesday.

It will save millions of dollars of investment by eschewing the traditional mode of selling at strings of luxury boutiques and initially will have only one shop in Geneva.

“You’re taking a very big risk if you are building a network of stores,” said Dunhill, former president of Alfred Dunhill. “We are embarking on a pioneering business model.”

Faberge wants to break into a sector that is seeing a deep slump overall, but where top names are still spending huge amounts to attract the rich.

Faberge is hoping the wealthy who want an exclusive experience will embrace its website as a starting point, before personally being shown a brooch or ring.

Dunhill said a survey of millionaires showed 95 percent made their last purchase on the Web.

130 billionaires for China "Go Asia"

Today, Hurun Report released the names of the Top Two Richest Individuals from the 2009 Hurun Rich List, a ranking of the 1000 richest individuals in China.

Wang Chuan Fu of BYD is the richest man in China with wealth of US$5.1 billion, followed by Zhang Yin of Nine Dragons Paper with wealth of US$4.9 billion.

The number of known US Dollar billionaires in China has grown to 130, up from 101 in 2008. The full list is to be released later in October.

“It seems ironic to me that China’s richest person could come from the car industry, especially considering the crisis this industry is facing across the world,” says Rupert Hoogewerf, founder and compiler of the Hurun Rich List.

“Wang Chuan Fu is leading the foray into the next generation of cars using clean technology.”

43-year old Wang Chuanfu saw his wealth shoot up five-fold to take top spot on the 2009 Hurun Rich List with wealth of US$ 5.1 billion.

Last year Wang was ranked 103 with wealth of US$880 million. Wang’s 27.8% of HK-listed BYD hit the big-time shortly after Warren Buffett bought 10% of the company one year ago.

BYD is highly regarded for its technology and innovation, and is considered a leader of the new generation of “green cars”.

Zhang Yin, the first woman to take top spot on the 2006 Hurun Rich List, has seen her stock double over the past year.

The ‘Paper Queen’ owns 72.25% of HK-listed Nine Dragons Paper together with husband Liu Mingzhong and brother Zhang Chengfei.

Nine Dragons Paper imports recycled paper and processes it into packaging and paper materials primarily targeted at China’s export industry.

“I estimate there to be the same number again of US Dollar billionaires that we have not yet found,” says Rupert Hoogewerf, founder and compiler of the Hurun Rich List.

Italian designer Giorgio Armani's home division is to deck out the interior of exclusive apartments in Rome, as part of a project to convert a historical building into a complex of luxury serviced flats.

Some 62 apartments are planned in the Cavour220 project -- a residential block occupying 12,000 sq m (129,200 sq ft) and composed of six linked buildings surrounding a garden.

Each flat will have its own specific ground plan, which can be finalized and furnished to personal tastes on the basis of layouts and finishes proposed by Armani/Casa.

Owners will also enjoy a personal concierge service, available 365 days a year, to help out with maintenance, babysitting, restaurant reservations, theater tickets as well as travel arrangements.

"The scheme was conceived from the desire to transform the ancient buildings of a quarter on the slopes of the Palatine Hill into a prestigious, sophisticated, cutting-edge residential complex," Armani said in a statement.

The complex is located on Via Cavour, that leads to the Coliseum. The project also involves Doughty Hanson & Co European Real Estate Fund II and property developer Europa Risorse. The first apartments will be ready for occupation in the first half of 2010.

50 millions euros for a new toy

Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz of Saudi royal family has a new toy:
the 65-meter (213-foot) Nourah of Riyad, the largest motoryacht built to date in Turkey.

Delivered last Friday, Nourah of Riyad was built at Yachtley, a shipyard located in the Kocaeli Free Zone, which runs along both the Black Sea and Sea of Marmara.

Nourah of Riyad reportedly has six guest staterooms, accommodations for 21 crew, a private cinema, two elevators, and of course a helipad. The interior design is by Donald Starkey.

Turkish Foreign Trade Minister Kürşat Tüzmen was present at the handover ceremony on Friday and says his country intends to remain at the forefront of yacht construction.

“This is a clear sign that we are growing fast in shipbuilding,” he told news agencies. “Our experts have already started preparations to build a 75-meter yacht here in Kocaeli.

The yacht has been built for a cost of 50 million euros ($65 million).
